CSV to Anki

Paste two columns or choose a CSV file, then download a file Anki imports without any setup.

Spreadsheet export or pasted rows, two columns.

Nothing to convert yet.

In Anki 2.1.54 or newer choose File, Import and pick the file. The note type and columns are already set.

How to use the CSV to Anki

  1. 1 Paste your rows or choose a .csv file, and check the preview.
  2. 2 Set the separator if it was not detected, and name the deck.
  3. 3 Download the file, then in Anki choose File, Import.

Why not import the CSV directly?

You can, but Anki then asks you to match the separator, note type, deck and columns by hand. This tool writes those choices into the top of the file using Anki’s file headers, so the import dialog opens with them already set. It also cleans up stray quotes and fields that contain line breaks.

What the file looks like

It is plain text, so you can open and check it. The first lines are headers such as #separator:tab, #html:false, #notetype:Basic and #deck:Your deck, and each line after that is one card with the front and back separated by a tab. Anki added support for these headers in version 2.1.54.

Getting a CSV from a spreadsheet

In Excel choose Save As and pick CSV UTF-8. In Google Sheets choose File, Download, Comma-separated values. In Numbers choose File, Export To, CSV. Keep the front in the first column and the back in the second, and tick First row is a header if your sheet has column titles.

Writing good cards from a list

One fact per card is easier to review than a long back. If a row holds several facts, split it into several rows before you convert. Keep a source note in the back if you will want to check it later.

FAQ

CSV to Anki FAQ

How do I import a CSV into Anki?

Download the file from this tool, open Anki, choose File, Import and select it. The separator, note type, deck and columns are already set in the file, so check the preview and click Import. It needs Anki 2.1.54 or newer.

Does this make an .apkg file?

No. It makes a text file for Anki’s importer, which is simpler and lets you read it before you import. If you need to share a deck with someone else, import it into Anki and export an .apkg from there.

What if my file has more than two columns?

The first column becomes the front and the second the back. Any other columns are ignored, so move what you want to keep into those two.

Can a card contain a comma or a line break?

Yes. Fields wrapped in double quotes are read as one field, including commas and line breaks inside them, which is how spreadsheets export them.

Is my data uploaded?

No. The conversion runs in your browser and nothing is sent to a server.
