What Is the TOEFL iBT?

The TOEFL iBT is the world's most widely accepted English proficiency test, required by more than 11,000 universities in 160 countries. ETS redesigned the test in 2023 — it's now shorter (~2 hours vs the old ~3 hours) and fully computer-based. Each section (Reading, Listening, Speaking, Writing) is scored 0–30. Most US universities require 80–100+ for graduate programs and 68–80+ for undergraduate.

Scoring Breakdown

Score range: Total: 0–120 (4 sections × 0–30 each). Average test-taker: ~85.
Percentiles: 100+ = strong for most graduate programs · 90+ = competitive · 80+ = minimum for most US universities
Important: Many universities have individual section minimums (e.g., Speaking 22+, Writing 24+). Check your specific programs — a high total with one very weak section can still disqualify you.

  • Learn integrated writing structure: summarize + add your analysis
  • Practice Writing for Academic Purposes: state and defend a clear position
4

Week 8: Full Practice Tests

  • Focus on any remaining weak areas
  • Test-day logistics: check your ID, test center, and timing

Section-by-Section Strategies

Speaking

  • Speak at a natural pace — don't rush; clarity matters more than speed
  • Structure your response: main point → reason → example → conclusion (PREP method)
  • Integrated speaking: briefly summarize the reading/lecture, then give your opinion
  • Practice with a timer — 45 or 60 seconds feels very short without rehearsal

Writing

  • Integrated task: do NOT give your opinion — summarize both the reading and lecture, then explain how the lecture responds to the reading
  • Academic Discussion task: state your opinion in the first sentence, support with 2 specific reasons, acknowledge complexity
  • Aim for 150–200 words (integrated) and 120+ words (academic discussion)
5

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Memorizing speaking templates word-for-word — ETS graders penalize robotic responses
  • Ignoring Listening practice — it's the section most affected by test-day nerves and requires trained automaticity
  • Writing very long responses — quality and structure beat quantity for TOEFL Writing
  • Not practicing under timed conditions — time pressure in Speaking and Writing is significant
  • Using a narrow vocabulary — vary your word choice to demonstrate lexical range

TOEFL iBT FAQs

Q TOEFL or IELTS — which should I take?

Both are widely accepted. The TOEFL is more popular for US graduate programs and uses an all-computer format. The IELTS is preferred by UK/Australian universities and includes a face-to-face speaking interview.

Q How many times can I take the TOEFL?

As many times as you want, but with at least 3 days between attempts. You can choose which scores to send to universities — they won't see unreported scores.

Q How long are TOEFL scores valid?

2 years from the test date. Plan your test timing so your score is still valid when your university application is reviewed.
