What Is the IB Diploma?
The IB Diploma is a rigorous two-year international qualification recognized by universities worldwide. Students take 6 subjects (3 at Higher Level, 3 at Standard Level) plus three core components: Theory of Knowledge (TOK), Extended Essay (EE), and Creativity Activity Service (CAS). The maximum is 45 points (42 from subjects + 3 bonus from TOK/EE). A score of 38+ puts you in roughly the top 10% globally.
Exam Format & Structure
Scoring Breakdown
Study Plan & Timeline
Year 1 (months 1–6): Foundation
- Choose your subjects wisely — HL subjects require significantly more depth
- Start IAs early — the research question is the hardest part
- Choose your EE topic and supervisor by December of Year 1
Year 1 (months 7–12): IAs & EE Draft
- Complete a full draft of your Extended Essay by end of Year 1
- Finish IA research/lab work for sciences
- Make flashcard decks for content-heavy subjects (History, Biology, Chemistry)
Year 2 (months 1–6): Exams Prep
- Begin past paper practice for each subject — use marking schemes
- Review every Paper 1 (short answer) technique per subject
- TOK essay: write a complete draft by February
Final 2 months: Exam Season
- 2 past papers per subject per week minimum
- Memorize subject-specific definitions, formulas, and key concepts
- Create summary notes (1 page per topic) for final revision
Section-by-Section Strategies
Internal Assessments
-
✓Read the assessment criteria BEFORE you start — your work must explicitly address each criterion
-
✓Science IAs: a focused, original research question scores far better than a broad one
-
✓Language A IAs: pick literary texts you genuinely find interesting — passion shows in the analysis
-
✓Submit your IA draft to your teacher early enough for meaningful feedback
Exam Papers
-
✓Always practice with the official mark scheme — it shows exactly what language the IB expects
-
✓Command terms (Evaluate, Analyze, Discuss, To what extent) have specific meanings in IB — know them all
-
✓Paper 2 essays: plan for 5 minutes before writing — a clear argument structure is worth more than a long essay
-
✓Science Paper 1 (MCQ): eliminate obviously wrong answers then use reasoning on the remaining two
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Underestimating IAs — they're worth 20–30% of final subject grades
- Starting the Extended Essay in Year 2 — IB recommends starting research in Year 1
- Choosing too many demanding HL subjects based on university requirements rather than your strengths
- Not using past papers with official mark schemes — this is the single highest-leverage study activity
- Neglecting TOK — a C on TOK + D on EE costs you the 3 bonus points
